I have found that the squealing sound is often caused by a disk whose 
magnetic coating is beginning to flake off.  Just one turn around the drive 
will dirty up your drive heads.  I often use a spare drive that has other 
problems to pre-read a new disk to make sure a bad disk does not contaminate 
my good drives.  Take a look at the disk surface.  If it looks like fish 
scales, it has gone bad.  There is no way I know of to fix that disk.
