Hi John!
I appreciate your advice too.  I have actually tried adding more solder when
I was desoldering various parts over the years.  Sometimes it works and
other times not so much.  I don't do it often enough to stay good at it.  I
tried to remove an ATX power supply connector from an old PC motherboard a
while back using a solder sucker which I use to be pretty good at as well,
but I was only able to free about half the pins and after messing with it
for quite a while, I ended up ordering one after a friend helped me find a
part number.  Thanks again for your help.  Take care my friend.

Kip,

Indeed 6809 chips are more precious than they used to be, but so is the pc
board you are removing they from.

 

If want to try to salvage them without investing in the "proper" tools here
is a couple of tricks I have used in the past.

 

Before unsoldering add a bit of solder (Radio Shack's is OK)to each pin.
Typically your solder will have a lower melting point than the solder used
on the pc board.  The new solder will mix with the old lowering its melting
point.

Next use a "pro" quality desoldering wick (not RadioShacks or use a liquid
flux with it) and remove as much solder as possible.

Sometimes this is all that will be need. Use the desoldering iron if
necessary, overheating can damage the chip and/or the pc board. A lifted pc
trace is permanent damage, while a 6809 can still be replaced.
