Aaron, That was the problem I was having. No shell icon to start the system. I'll try your suggestion later and see what I get.

Ah, looks like on a totally clean system things go differently. Was afraid
of that.

When the "MinGW Installation Manager" window opens, check the status of
these two items:

mingw32-base
msys-base

If they are not shown as installed, click and mark them for installation.
Then choose Apply Changes from the Installation menu, wait for it to
finish, and exit the installer.

This will install what you need as far as I can tell.

If you do not have an msys shell icon at this point, go to
c:/mingw/msys/1.0 and you will find msys.bat, which is what the icon it
used to create links to. You can use that to start the msys shell and
should be ready to carry on with the instructions. You can even make
yourself a pretty icon with the .ico files found in the same place.

No idea why this icon isnt made anymore (at least in some situations, I
havent done much testing). I suspect things are installing fine
regardless, in all test cases so far the mingw and msys environments are
being set up correctly, just no handy icon for the shell.

Ill update the docs after more testing. As always, it is challenging to
make guides/docs that apply to a changing target, even for something as
simple as installing the thing.
