To me, it was getting a No Halt floppy controller. Running 40 track double sided (360K) on a single floppy was a huge jump over the 156K standard disks. Before I moved to a hard drive system, I had an 80 track floppy for awhile -- 720K might as well have been a hard drive back then.
Today, DriveWire or the SuperIDE with a CompactFlash card and RGB-DOS would be the way I'd go if starting fresh.
