Wikipedia has a fairly decent article on TNEF (winmain.dat). Suffice it to
say, it's primarily a Microsoft attachment used by Outlook and Exchange but
it can be a security risk since it may contain your localhost username and
path information.

I don't know what it is nor where it came from. I recently re-installed a
clean XP SP3 on this machine, and after I installed Office, they started
appearing.

On Wednesday 24 July 2013 08:29:01 Bill did opine:
Bill, what is this winmail.dat that is attached to all your msgs lately?
Its far bigger that the message, which in this case is 114 bytes, but this
thing is 10 kilobytes of base64 encoded gobbledygook, big enough to be a
virus or something? Kmail says its a TNEF message, never heard of such a
critter.
