Seems amazing to me that such a basic, well-known component would be
subject to such failure rates, especially since there are still big-
name vendors providing these regulators (e.g. Texas Instruments,
Fairchild, ON Semiconductor). Heck, DigiKey indicates that TI has 4
million of them currently available from the factory; that doesn't
sound like they're EOLed just yet. Also, would they not be taking
samples and testing during production runs? Perhaps there has been
improper ESD handling precautions? Who knows?
Is it worth trying to order some from a different seller (e.g. Mouser,
DigiKey, Newark)?
But yes, for the hobby-oriented the transition to surface mount
components is a source of great frustration.
