It's a good question, but I assume it had to do with the unusual
flexibility each port seems to have been given. In other words, it seems to
have been up to whoever was coding it to interpret it as they deemed best.
Certainly the classic inspirations and then the original PC version were
text-based - and that's how most Rogue-like purists prefer it - so it's not
a particular loss to not have traditional graphics. In fact, some actively
despise the graphical versions (or any graphical versions for that matter).
Certainly, while, for example, the Atari ST port is excellent, having the
visuals cuts down considerably on view/map distance, so you have far less
insight into the game world than you do with the text versions, and in
particular contrast, the 80-column CoCo 3 version.
