An easier way may be to use the VI or FTDD devices (part of VRN, and
standard in NitrOS).  IIRC you basically open /VI for reading and it
sends you a character 60 times a second. /FTDD can do the same, IIRC,
and also has some interesting memory-allocation functionality that may
be of interest to you.
