Wow, memories. I recall seeing A-BUS advertised in The Rainbow, and actually got to play with one when I worked at Radio Shack (sometime between 1988-1990).
A customer had come in and he was building a system to monitor grocery story refrigerators. The industrial equipment to do this was costly, and somehow he had discovered A-BUS and the CoCo. He was going to use a simple program on a CoCo with the A-BUS hardware hooked up to the refrigerators. I got to play with one, but I forget what became of the project.
I have since worked with controllers to automate Halloween displays and such, and better understand what A-BUS was all about. They made A-BUS adapters for many types of computers, then the I/O cards were (I suppose?) generic and could be used in any of them.
I had forgotten all about that, but it sure was an easy way to click a relay or read an I/O line!
