The problem I see it with top posting on a mailing list like this one, 
is that it makes the flow of discussion much harder to refer back to in 
6 months time when you have forgotton what the last person said.

Whereas bottom posting mostly works because in English we read/write 
left to writ, top to bottom, top posting breaks this up.

Whichever method is used trimming out no longer relivant text / 
signatures etc cirtainly helps. It also helps with the one word answer 
scenario where you should trim everything *BUT* the specific point that 
you are answering.
