Good point, John.   The contacts definitely got quite a bit brighter after 
the eraser treatment.

That's exactly why I thought it was the rom chip as well. Turns out it was 
oxidized
contacts. Why it worked okay under OS9 but not under RSDOS is a mystery to
me. I also didn't know that gold contacts could oxidize, but apparently
they can to some degree.
