All through history there are those who laid a foundation that allows others to exploit and go to amazing levels.  Dennis Richie laid a foundation that allowed many others to rise to great levels of success.  Yet another unsung hero of the computer revolution.  Here are some others:

Andrew Fluegelman - PC-Talk (Freeware)
Jim "Button" Knopf - PC-File (User Supported)
Bob Wallace - PC-Write (Shareware)

They created a marketing method that is standard in the industry nowadays.

Steve had a vision to change the world yet the work of those before him gave him the tools to do it.
