I've never seen that kind of kit, but one can easily double the 
cassette port speed by doing the "2mhz" poke and using a digital 
recorder.  I discovered this first a long time ago using a Sony MD 
Walkman (Mini Disc unit), then tried it a few years ago on a small 
voice recorder that has an Audio In jack.

You can also try reducing the tape sine wave table in half in 
addition to using the high speed poke and see where that gets 
you.  The delay between data blocks might have to be fiddled with to 
get this working for block type files.
