PS:  Took the place apart, only drawing blood once, and found one unused 4 
pin din connector and a 6 foot cable with 4 pin connectors on both ends, 
but no db9 female plugs, so I guess I go to the shack anyway. I avoid that 
place if I can, but the avoidance is a 70+ mile round trip from my 20. :(  
I can buy several of those db9's from Jameco for the price of the gas for 
that trip.
I looked up the FTDI parts, and they can do a megabaud, so that shouldn't 
be much of a problem.  I presume the java server that runs on here can use 
a /dev/ttyUSB port?
