Respectfully, I think that might be an exaggeration..  as far as I
know, only AT&T disables side loading (maybe something has changed?).
In any case, Google has nothing to do with it, it's the cell carrier
that makes that call.  If you do have a phone with sideloading
disabled, there are simple apps that will do it for you, no need to
"jailbreak", "root" or otherwise do anything strange.  One such app is
the "Sideload Wonder Machine", which seems to be considered pretty
good by reviewers.

Even with sideloading disabled, I believe you would still have full
access to the Android market which has none of the restrictions found
in the Apple store.  You can find a wealth of great apps there, some
of which have no iThing counterpart due to the limitations of the app
store... network analyzers, web and ftp servers, programming
environments like App Inventor, all kinds of neat stuff.

If anything, I'd say Apple is taking a cue from Google (or responding
to the FTC investigation) by loosening it's restrictions in recent
days.  I think that's a good thing for Apple users... for instance it
is now possible to have emulators on the iPhone.  There is a huge
selection of emulators in the Android market (Apple, C64, Acorn,
NES/SuperNES/gameboy, Playstation, Atari 2600, ZX spectrum, MSX, HP48,
probably more that I haven't tried yet), so I think its safe to say
they are a popular app category.  Now people with iPhones will be able
to enjoy these as well.
