Well, it is at best a curiousity.  I (perhaps optimistically)
presume that the grey version matches those '83-vintage articles.
It might be nice to know if the software that works with the old
one also works with the new one.  At least then we have a reference
for the writing code to use the newer one too, even if the extended
functionality would still be missing.
