All too often on mailing lists, people let pet peeves dictate how they
respond to posts. Spelling is an all-time winner on that one - people can't
seem to not point that out. I know sometimes I fat-finger a word when I'm
tired - everybody does - but does it deserve public commentary? Another
example is the 'top poster' comments from earlier. Seriously? Is it so
important that some people wish to give a lesson in properly replying to a
post? I know this particular instance was nowhere near as heated as ones in
the past, however, as long as people are contributing to the community, who
cares whether the posts are top or bottom.
This recent episode with Jason was sad, IMHO. Here's a guy who wanted to
learn and contribute (he helped me with some code errors I made on my site).
Was it wrong of him to expect/want a kudos for some of the work he'd done on
the artifact colors? I don't know, I didn't read the responses in the same
manner he did - I didn't see Roger's requests for the pictures the same way
he did. I think he did receive kudos from quite a few people, however, he
seemed to be looking for a pat on the back from the more seasoned experts of
the community.
Maybe it's because I've hung around for the better part of 4 years I'm used
to everyone's personality by now. I think what Jason was trying to do was
commendable as far as trying to organize a resource for coders and folks
wanting to learn (I am certainly included in the later part). Is Jason
passionate about the CoCo and the community? Evidently so. To an extent I
think we all are very passionate, otherwise why would we be here? And we've
all occasionally stepped over the line.I know full well I've been guilty - I
raked Steve Bjork publicly over the coals for some of his comments to Roger,
when mine were no better - probably worse considering it wasn't any of my
business. Indeed, after much thought about what was going on was between
Steve and Roger, the comments should definitely have been taken off-list,
mine included, and so should some of the responses to this latest issue.
I'm not pointing fingers at anyone. I've received help from people too
numerous to list and have the utmost respect for everyone here. Is there
room for improvement - sure, always is. I hope Jason reconsiders - he seemed
to have a lot to offer. However, as different as all of our personalities
are, something like this is bound to happen every now and again...
