[Coco] Altera bit file bad?

Is it possible that the Altera coco3fpga bit files on the Yahoo group are
bad? I finally figured out what I was doing wrong with my DE1 (pgm/run
switch in wrong position). Now, when I load the *.sof file it tries to
do... something, but the display is green and purple garbage. The garbage
is _exactly_ the same every time I press button 1 (which I assume to be
reset) so I'm thinking the "rom" image may be corrupted.

Another possibility: Is there something required on a CF card in order to
achieve basic operation?

For reference, the Altera default file works properly and I see a well
formed VGA display when that is programmed in.

I would try re-synthesizing from source, but discovered to my surprise
that the Altera sources do not seem to be available! Is this an oversight
or is Gary keeping them confidential? There are some older sources in a
zip file, but these appear to be specific for the Xilinx Spartan 3 1M
board.
