They will be DIP packages. While SMT would certainly be cheaper component wise, use far less real-estate and be less power hungry, I do not have lots of experience soldering SMT parts (I've done three - fortunately they all worked...). If this works, I could foresee an SMT version that could be made to fit into an existing MPI case for those who want to at least maintain the appearance of an original piece. I think this DIP unit is going to be too large for this. Then again, your CPLD idea would be even better... ;)

Are you going to layout the board with through hole (dip package) or SMT (surface mount) 
parts?

All the logic chips that are on Tom's schematic can be bought in dip or surface mount 
packages.
