A slightly longer than anticipated delay: still tweaking the IDE emulation 
and also tried adding MPI support which is broken and causing slot 4 to be 
selected after booting HDBDOS for some reason.

Also doesn't help when I leave the DE1 at work. :(

It may also interest some of you that I now have the TRS-80 Model I booting 
into LDOS off the SD card, which is emulating a hard disk attached via Peter 
Bartlett's IDE interface. That's 8 partitions of 10MB each online.
