not sure what VM on your mac you are using, but I was testing Sun's VM.  
Sun xVM VirtualBox on a PC and I could connect to a usb to serial 
cable.  by adding the appropriate serial port.  Since Bluetooth serial 
works essentially the same way.  if you VM doesn't work you might try  
Sun's.
