I don't have any experience with XMESS, just MESS. I think you can get 
your questions answered here http://linuxreviews.org/man/xmess/ .

As I understand MESS development, you probably should be using SDLMESS 
instead of XMESS. Check out this site to see if SDLMESS would be better
