It stands for Multi User Dimensions.  You can play online text and sometimes ANSI based mulitplayer role playing games. There are many different themes of games you can play that take place in various "worlds". Fantasy, Sci-Fi, Star Trek , Star Wars and lots based on different books, movies ect. Some of them get very extensive in size and have large user bases. A few can have 100+ players on at one time.
