I believe the audio spectrum analyzer also used the cassette port for audio input. Simple enough to plug your cassette cable into the PC sound card or mp3 player.
The cassette input uses a zero-crossing detector circuit which only gives you single-bit sound in. Using any one of the joystick inputs gives you 6-bit sound in, but the analog-to-digital conversion has to be performed by software (ie. low sample rate).
