[Coco] Shell i=/t1& slowdown

Hello.
Recently I made a serial cable and tested it hooking up a W98 laptop to
the bit-banger.
Boot NOS9-030206
Xmode /t1 9600-8-N-1 and all is well. Could send stuff to WinTerm (eg.
list startup >/t1)
Then I did shell i=/t1& and got a nice terminal on WinTerm. BUT the Coco
slowed down horribly!
My startup fires up /Term and /w1/2/3 text with shells.
Is this normal? Of course each process takes up its setpr slices but the
slowdown is very pronounced.
Suggestions?
