The best system that I ever saw, and in fact the reason I bought a CoCo was a series by Bruce Chubb that ran in Model Railroader Magazine in 1983-1984 or there abouts.

It was reprinted by TAB books as Build a Universal Computer Interface.

It was quite involved however and not inexpensive, but it could control 256 events.
