If it were just a question of accepting a parameter with either the 
presence or absence of the -  , it would be trivial to handle both. 
However, there are also changes such as pau for pause.

I don't think we want two each of tmode/xmode but there should be 
consensus on how the commands should display settings. Put another way, 
even if the commands will accept pause (equals on), -pause (equals off), 
-pau=0, and -pau=1, what gets displayed with tmode and no parameters?

Perhaps the diagnostic print out should be in clear text while the 
parameters could be old or new syntax. Whatever is decided, the help 
message should indicate the old syntax and how the new syntax has 
supplanted it.
