As a good test case, have you tried running UltiMusE=LX on one of these 68K  
Macs?
It runs great from the command line, and works a graphic screen thru direct  
Xlib calls -- no KDE or Gnome support needed.

Would be interested to hear if it works.  I run it on a 150 MHz  Pentium I
