Jan-March 1979 BYTE magazine had a three-part article on the 6809 titled 
something like "A Microprocessor for the Revolution." I believe the 
authors had something to do with the 6809. The only one whose name I 
remember was, I think, Terry Ritter.

If someone has that article, I think it would answer at least some of 
your questions.
