I forgot to mention that the icon problem can be cured by deleting the file
ShellIconCache and by increasing the size of the entry
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\explorer\Max
Cached Icons.
