CompactFlash is actually IDE but with an obviously different form
factor.  That's why adapters are so easy to make for it.
So the super driver does support at least some CD and DVD formats.

I wouldn't say WAY bigger since the universal driver concept will make
it easier to support more devices with a single driver and is less
work than several different interfaces will require.  With the work
the Atari guys are doing and it's much easier to do.  The 6502 code is
VERY close to 6809 because the 6502 was designed to look a lot like
the 6800... which the 6809 borrows from.  Hence the ease of migrating
the code from the 6502.  Granted, the Atari stuff isn't designed for
OS-9, but if there are any sample OS-9 drivers out there it's easy to
cut and paste USB related funtionality.
