If you want to learn 'C' I recommend http://www.mixsoftware.com/

Buy  "Power C" and the "Power C Trace Debugger". These cost $20 each and 
that's all you need. These run under MSDos only, but they'll run on most any 
old PC taht can run DOS. Power C comes with a 3 in 1 manual which is a 
complete course in C.

That's how I learned C - and went on to teach it.
