Nice looking, SLOW, clunky, error-prone Web interfaces.
With lots of ads in the sidebars loaded along with the content, in order to
make it even slower.
Mailing lists, with their pure ASCII, are much more efficient in use of
computer resources, as well as human resources (as in: your time).
I know how clunky Web-based discussions systems are from using Goggle's
Netnews interface (more below), and some music forums.
And why have I tried Google's new reader? Because AOL shut down its Netnews
newsgroup service. In fact, I read some posts on Gogle to the effect that
Netnews is dying off -- fewer and fewer sites want to support it, since no
money can be made off it. I really miss newsgroups -- been using them since the
early '80s -- but there seemed to be fewer and fewer worthwhile posts on the
ones I was following anyway. And yes, the spammers have found them.
With newsgroups dying, this bit.listserv stuff sounds like a place to
migrate away from, not to. Dennis' list works just fine for me, just like the old
Princeton reflector. If he needs funds to keep it up, we will pay for it.
But I don't think anything we could do will keep newsgroups alive much longer.
