I am in the process of testing and tweaking the .pdf conversion process, but
all in all I am pretty encouraged. One run yielded a 70mb .pdf file, which
averages out to approximately 530kb per page. If I can achieve this
consistently I will be able to pack quite a few magazines on a single DVD...
My estimates for Volume IX is around 850mb for the PDF files of the scanned
magazines. Adding in the files from the Rainbow on Disk is pretty small,
but it's unknown what size issues will be presented with the cassette
image/wav/etc files.

One thing I did notice was that I am not going to be able to get away with
not doing post processing on the files. Since the magazines are old and
some of them are starting to yellow that comes through on the scans. The
Gimp is a wonderful tool to fix them up - I have been using the "select by
color" tool to select the yellowed areas and the removal has not lessoned
the overall quality of the scans.

Michael Harwood

I have finished scanning the 132 pages that comprise Vol. IX No. 1 (August
1989) and will be plugging in into PDF format this evening so that I can
estimate size needs for media. The raw image files saved as compressed .tif
files weighs in at just a smidgeon over 1gb in size, and I am fairly excited
to see my size estimates be incorrect in a positive way!

This particular volume has a poor quality cover that was not noted in the
collection notes, and I think I need to pour over the covers once more and
be more critical about the quality.

One down, 142 to go....

Michael Harwood
