OO can open like 80% of docs just fine, and in the other 20% there are
minor formatting issues. So one way or another you can get to the
content, which is the most important thing.

But for opening Office docs the most compatible solution is MS Office,
which runs fantastic under CrossOver Office on Linux (the commercial
variant of WINE).
