Glen, the other option is to do the study work yourself with some 
decent books....and build a small home lab...
My first CNE cert (3) was done through EDS and cost about $7000 back 
in '97 and I did the CNE 4 & 5 cert's on my own....saving $$$$$
I did the same for my MCP certs's.....saved $$$$$ again....
Self study is not for everyone and puts a lot more pressure on one 
esp. when trying to work and live....
What helped was writing the exams on vacation....much to my wife's 
chagrin....
I did the retail repair thing for about a week recently and decided 
it would make more sense (and money) to do this myself as a 
business.....
Linux Servers have good foothold in this town and is on my list to 
re-acquaint myself with.....h3ll Ottawa is 75% Java based with IBM 
being the big player in town (not Microsoft)
I micro-unix for the CoCo would be cool in my books... :-)
