Is "S" similar to the old Commodore-64 scheme, whereby the luminance signal, 
at full 4 MHz BW, was wired separately from the chroma subcarrier?  So at 
least you got full BW on the black-white details, though the colors were just as 
smeary.

And Component is close to RGB?  I have this fairly new 27" TV with Component 
inputs, so from what you said it would be worth paying a little more for a DVD 
player with component output (and more $$ for the connecting cable).  --Mike
