I remember something very darkly I once read in this book:

I guess it won't help to contact the author Claus Brod (you might try it 
at twikiadmin_at_clausbrod.de), because he schould be out of the topic 
after 20 years (like me). I will take a look later (into the book), 
maybe I can give you a clue. I learnt almost everything about copy 
protection from this book. The Atari ST seemed to use a similar WD 
controller.
