I take that these were manual unsubscribes, and not "bounce" 
unsubscribes or you would have said so.

Maybe they switched to the gmane newsgroup?

I did, but I left my e-mail accounts to no-mail.  Maybe some prefer not 
to use that option when they go on vacation.
