The 6847 non-interlaced VDG is recommended for use in systems 
where absolute NTSC compatibiolity are not required. If NTSC 
compatibility is required, perhaps for caption overlays on lroad-case 
signals, the the 6847Y interlaced VDG is recommended. 

>From everything else except for the field sync generation the two 
seem interchangable if you are using a TV set as a monitor. The Y 
version generates 525 lines instead of 262. 

Maybe worth a try?
