Some idiot decided if we made guns hard to get there would be fewer out
there, and fewer guns would logically mean fewer gun crimes. The problem
is the guns aren't the problem -- the people using the guns are. Make
guns illegal (like drugs!), and only those inclined to commit those
types of crimes will have them -- "outlaw guns and only outlaws will
have guns". That logic has been proven true, whereas the correlation
with the number of guns available has proven faulty. One community near
Atlanta was having a lot of break-ins years ago because they were an
enticing target for lower income communities. The local government
decided to enact a law the REQUIRED every home owner to have a firearm.
Don't know what to get or how to use it? There were free classes given a
few nights a week by the local police. It was suggested for single women
and older folks to get get shotguns, preferably semi auto or double
barrel, 20 gauge loaded with 00 buckshot. Shortly after this ran in the
local and Atlnata papers, break-ins all but stopped.
I'm military, but don't want to see guns banned from the public. I also
don't see a need for a civilian gun that holds more than 10 rounds -- a
limit to six would even be reasonable for hunting and home defense
purposes. 10 is more inline for a handgun 9mm or less because you don't
use one shell per intruder, but I digress. The public no longer needs
guns so they can come to the aid of the state, so no need for assault
type rifles except for collectors. They don't need to be banned, just
require a permit as is required for carrying a concealed weapon (at
least the same checks). You can get a permit to own a full auto machine
gun! I'd also like to see a NATIONAL concealed carry permit. That's been
needed for a long time. We now have the means to allow any state to
check on it -- same system used for background checks when buying a
handgun.
Sorry about no CoCo content. Hopefully there will still be a CoCoFest in
2005 and I'll be able to attend. That's my goal right now, but it may be
to close to moving time for me.
