The 486 processors are capable of accessing 4 GBytes of ram. 
Having siad that most motherboards of that era limit actual ram to 
the range between 64 and 128MBytes. During the 486 era most 
desktops used 30 pin sims and 32MByte was about as big as you 
could get in one module. 

For laptops you have check with the manual. Those ranged from as 
little as 32MBytes to 128Mbytes. Some laptops have proprietary 
ram and must be bought through them. 

Even if it uses 30 pin simms, they are harder to find. You need to 
verify with the manufacturer's manual to be sure you get the coorect 
ram modules.
