Normally that's a reasonable approach, but he may have a hard time finding
another CM-8 working, or much better, a Magnavox or even a Commie that can be
slightly hacked (add a NOR gate or whatever to combine the sync pulses).
As folks in various antique and vintage collection and restoration have been
learning, the cutoff point for what's worth restoring and repairing keeps on
moving downwards. As Coco gear gets rarer, a piece that would have been junk
or spare parts donor last year becomes worth fixing up yet again.
I don't know how many other parts burned out in his CM-8 along with the
deflection yoke (which I suggested how to repair easily). But I bet 90% of the
junked monitors he could get for parts still have a good yoke. Somewhere there
is another bad CM-8 which could turn his (or the other one) into a working
model.
