May I commend to you the book "Wide As the Waters".  Forgot the author.
It is exactly about what you describe. The 2 or 3 hundred years that it took
to translate the bible from Latin to English.

Time magazine touches on this for the week of December 22 in an article
titled "The Lost Gospels".
