I am not sure but I seem to remember that the 6820's did have 
some problems with the ports though at this time I cannot 
remember what it was. I believe by 1980 all production was stopped 
as the 6821 were now in full production. Also by 1982 the CMOS 
version MC146823 was just about to release.
