I wanted to let everyone know a date for the proposed VSCLS Board Retreat - August 23, 2008. Bernie Bekken has graciously volunteered to host the retreat at her house in Stuarts Draft. Please plan on attending - this will be a good time to review our updated By-Laws and Procedures, talk about issues effecting our society and profession and also have some social time together. Thanks to everyone for being a part of VSCLS and the time and effort spent in keeping the chapter active. Maybe it is just because it is a hazy, hot, humid day in July, but when they start talking about regulation of sterile processing technicians, and yet almost anyone can be hired to perform lab tests, it makes me a bit angry. As I read the criteria that they are looking at, it makes it hard for me to understand why they continue to ignore the clinical laboratory. Anyway, I have written a response to Elizabeth Carter (email address provided in attachment) to express my concerns that they would be evaluating the merits of a person performing the sterilization, but not the individuals determining if the sterilizers are performing correctly, or, heaven forbid, if they are not, what organisms have the contaminated the patient with. I just thought it might be good to flood her with some emails reminding her that laboratory professionals perform testing upon which physicians base 70-80 percent of their clinical decisions. Who knows, maybe one day, we will hit a nerve with someone. Mary Ann has served Region II for 6 year and has been very faithful in attending our board meetings to offer CE for the board as well as speaking at out spring meetings over the years. Having been in that position I know she has done a tremendous job of keeping the states and members in Region II informed. As Mary Ann moves into other leadership roles in ASCLS it would be nice for VSCLS to show our appreciation by giving her a gift along with writing a Proclamation to be read at the final House of Delegates at the annual meeting. PA attempted to get all the states in Reg. II to contribute and come up with suggestions for a gift from the Region but there was no response to their emails so they decided to go it alone, as we will have to do. Randy and I have been discussing what we could give her that would be from Virginia. We came up with the idea of a framed print from one of the Virginia artists. Randy has worked with Ken Shuler's wife and knows Ken and we looked at his gallery of prints and found one we liked. Randy called Ken and he has that print already framed. The cost of the framed print, tax and shipping to me would come to around $170 -175. If we just buy the print I will not have time to get it framed and it would be about the same price and we would have to put up with my inartistic selection rather than going with the mat and framed selected by the artist. So, I move that the VSCLS BOD approve the purchase of the framed print from Ken Schuler as an appreciation gift for Mary Ann McLane not to exceed $175. The money will have to come from our reserve funds as there is no budget line for this gift Due to the short time frame please respond asap or before. Randy needs to call Ken Schuler tomorrow or Friday at the latest. If you want to view the print go to www.kenschuler.com and click on the Gallery. Scroll down to the row of pictures just above the "12 Snowmen" and it is the picture of the Hummingbird and the flower, next to the bluebird picture.
