I agree with Brian that membership numbers in themselves aren't enough, it's
a starting point, but for better accuracy you need to cross reference
engagement levels (how many visits, how long on site, etc) - and, of course,
it also depends on which audience you are trying to reach. i.e. there's no
point reaching the "biggest" audience if your target audience isn't among
them.

Three free online tools that can help you work out how many people are
visiting those social media sites, for how long, and demographics,
are Alexa, Compete, and Quantcast  - though n.b. these three are US centric,
so not as useful for measuring international audiences, however there may be
regional variants of these companies.

Anyone know of regional alternatives?

There are also paid services like ComScore, HitWise, Neilsen/Netratings,etc
