I never said that! <grin>

The message that appeared today was probably sent by a computer virus. If
you have not already read it, delete it at once. If you have read it, delete
it, and check your computer for viruses. But there was no attachment
because, as an anti-virus measure, we do not allow attachments on the
Workbook mailing lists.

The "From" field of an e-mail is the most easily faked field of all. It is
extremely doubtful that this virus came from the office computer, since Macs
just do not do viruses! Robert, I know, checks his computer routinely for
viruses, and I'm sure Nicola and Paul do as well. Last time this happened,
after checking no virus was found, but we should probably do a scan.

The most likely source of this virus mail is someone else's computer,
someone with a Windows machine who has a Circle mail address in their
address book. That's how the viruses spread. It gets on a Windows machine,
reads its address book, and sends copies of itself to everyone in the list,
using randomly selected addresses from the address book in the "from" field.

So the general rule, when someone reports, "I got a virus from your
address," is simply: we run a virus check on all Windows machines. If
nothing is found, we ignore the reports; the source of the infection is not
our machines. There is nothing more we can do. HOWEVER, IF YOU RUN WINDOWS
YOU REALLY NEED TO SCAN FOR VIRUSES REGULARLY, EVERY WEEK OR TWO.

The only attached file sent regularly from the Circle is our newsletter, A
Better Way, sent as a PDF file six times per year. That is sent from the
betterway at circleofa.com mailing list. Infrequently we may send out a news
mailing with photos or graphics that may come through as attached files;
that generally would come from circlenews at circleofa.com or
combined_circle_lists at circleofa.com, and not from the acimlessons or
acimwkbk lists.
